The Historic Hill Association

Newport, Rhode Island

Top 3 biggest issues City wide and why
1. Historic Streetscape Issues: Our City Government fails to understand the importance of Historic Streetscapes as part of the economic puzzle of why people come to visit Newport. Concrete and asphalt no longer should be the accepted standard for street 'restoration.' The gas light maintenance issue is abysmal and has been deteriorating over the last 3 years.

2. Property taxes: The cost of living in Newport continues to escalate with increased water rates creating hardship for residents and businesses alike.

3. Noise and Nuisance: Though not city-wide, noise and nuisance issues still continue to plague The Historic Hill Area especially when the bars close and patrons wander through The Hill trying to find their illegally parked car. Motorcycle noise problems are still a significant quality of life issue not just for The Historic Hill but for the entire city, with no resolution in sight.

The above issues have been 'smoldering' for years and are top priority topics for the past 12 months with no satisfactory settlement in sight.

The significant tax base of residents should cause City Councilors and the City Administration to pay attention to our concerns.
